Sirag ist eine Konzert-Soloperformance mit Gesang, arabischer Laute und Elektronik.
Das über einstündige Stück beinhaltet Kompositionen und vertonte Gedichte von Schweizer Lyrikerinnen und Lyrikern (Pedro Lenz, Rafael Urweider, Anne Perrier, Madeleine Buess, Karin Petersen...). Deren Thematik wird durch Zwischentexte, Inszenierungen und Videoprojektionen illustriert und verwoben.
Das Stück basiert auf dem vor kurzem erschienenen Album «wurzeln», wo Elkholy mit verschiedenen Musikstilen experimentiert und die Gedichte bekannter Schweizer Autoren wie Raphael Urweider oder Pedro Lenz vertont. Die Musik, der Gesang und die abstrakten Projektionen entführen das Publikum in verschiedene Welten und Zeiten; versetzen die Zuhörer in ein transzendentes Gefühl.
Nora Amin, welche auch Regie führt, schuf Zwischentexte, welche die Stimmungen und Inhalte der Lieder verweben und neue Sichtweisen und Inspirationen eröffnen, Einblicke in fremdes und eigenes Ich.
Elkholys musikalisches Werk wird damit zu einer einzigartigen lyrischen Erzählung.
Der ägyptische Künstler und Filmemacher Ibrahim Ghareib (Kairo) erzeugt spezielle Bilder und Projektionen, die Musik und Erzählung dramaturgisch illustrieren.
Sirag vereinigt Sprachen (Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch und Arabisch), baut Brücken zwischen Kulturen und beschreibt das Menschsein in einer musikalischen Erzählung als universelle Form, in der persönliches Erleben und kollektive Erzählungen verschmelzen.
Eine Performance, welche den Prozess der Komposition als Reflexion und Selbstfindung darstellt und für das Publikum erlebbar macht. Gemeinsamkeit wird erschaffen durch Musik, Worte und Stimmungen im Licht einer multikulturellen Seelenverwandtschaft – vorgetragen von einem Solosänger dessen fremdartige Stimmfarbe zu fesseln vermag.

Sirag is a musical performance by the singer/performer and music composer/ musician Wael Sami El-Kholy. It is based on his new music album "wurzeln" where he experiments with intercultural forms and styles of music, with the lyrics of some unique writers, among them the Swiss Raphael Urweider. While the music and the singing transport the audience to diverse times and spaces, often reaching a special state of transcendence, the text written by Nora Amin -who is also the staging director- works as script of in-between monologues, going towards weaving the connotations and worlds of all songs into creating a performance fabric where the outstanding musical work of Wael Samy El-Kholy expands as a musical narrative and poetic performance of its own authenticity and complexity.
Sirag fuses languages (German, French and Arabic), bridges between music cultures, and retrieves the humanness of musical storytelling as a universal form where the personal and collective narratives meet. A performance that reflects on the process of making music itself, as an experience of transformation/fusion of identities, and as an experiment of performing the self. It is an endeavour to enjoy music and song under the light of an interwoven soul, that of the solo performer, and with the guidance of a bridge which is specifically the bridge of the migrant-free voice.
An original visual design that replaces the usual light design for the stage by the projection of original drawings made specifically for the performance by artist Ibrahim Ghareib. The drawings projected inspire a tradition of shadow play while bringing authentic aesthetics to the performance and consolidating the images found in the lyrics and in the script. The visual projection brings also motion and growth to the audio experience in order to provide a solid stage grounding for the performance.
